Name.com is turning evil! Charging for Privacy Now!

If you haven’t heard yet Name.com is going to be charging for Privacy who is service now. Many of my customers have left Godaddy and went to Name.com on my recommendation just for that free privacy that they offered.name-com

Here is the blurb from their web site.

Hi folks. Name.com always strives to offer the lowest price on all our products and up until today we’ve been able to offer Private Whois for free for a long time. These types of posts are never fun, and no one enjoys raising prices, but sometimes it becomes necessary so we can continue to offer these great services.

While some registrars charge as much as eight or nine dollars per domain for this service, our new promotional price, starting today, is only $1.99 per domain annually. This means we are still offering some of the best pricing for this service anywhere. We realize that changes like this can impact our customer’s plans and budgets, so we’ve taken some proactive steps that we feel will help to curb the impact of this new change. Those actions are:

  • All domains that currently have Private Whois already turned on will continue to receive it for free.
  • The new pricing will begin today and will only apply to domains that don’t already have Private Whois enabled and/or new domain registrations.
  • We are running a promotional price of just $1.99/domain per year, which is one of the lowest prices available.
  • We’ve created a promo code called “FREEWHOIS” that will discount the current special pricing of $1.99 to $0.00, making this service free for the first year for orders using this promo code.

They try to make it right by offering the first year free when using the promo code “FREEWHOIS”. But seriously we thought you guys were better than Godaddy. Now your turning into them. Forgetting the small guys, getting greedy and wanting more.

Well I will start to look for the next company that gives great deals, and I will start telling my customers all about them.

I will still use Name.com until the price gets to be a little more than godaddy’s. I have heard horror stories from godaddy customers about them freezing their whole account from a spam complaint. I haven’t heard anything like that about name.com so as long as they seem to have our interests in mind I will keep using em.

  2. Hi Rich,

Thanks for your honest comments. We really attempt to offer the best prices and service that we can. Like any business the best thing we can do for our customers is offer them good pricing and better service. Having the ability to charge for private whois gives us some flexibility on how we move forward with our products and pricing. No customers want prices to rise and we really do love and appreciate our customers. This was not an easy decision for us. Our goal is to be profitable enough as a company to provide our customers and users awesome tools, incredible security, a great experience, and a domain registrar that will be stable and usable a generation from now. I also understand that each and every customer needs to make a personal decision in who they use and trust for registering domains. Domains are often times some of the very most important assets of a business. We believe that we are better than Godaddy at providing a great customer experience, upfront pricing, transparency, along with true ease in registering domain names.

I personally wish you the best with all of your endeavors.

    sincerely,
    Bill Mushkin
    CEO/Founder Name.com

      Bill,

Thank you for your response. I do agree you have a great service without all the lag of Godaddy. I personally will probably keep using you since the Privacy is still cheaper than Godaddy. But hopefully this isn’t like the Post Office Syndrome where you raise it this month and than insert another increase in a couple months.

Once again thank you for stopping in and leaving feedback, I really doubt if that other company would take time to do this.

      Rich
